Permanent Residency

Permanent residence in Canada is obtained on the basis of various criteria. There are several options to obtain Permanent Residence depending on the destination and your language ability (Quebec's jurisdiction on immigration is different from other provinces). Upon being granted permanent residence, the candidate must fulfil his or her necessary residency obligations: to stay in Canada for at least two years over a period of five years, pay taxes and obey all Canadian laws, be they federal, provincial or municipal.

To maintain this status, it is necessary to reside in Canada for at least two years over a period of five years. By fulfilling his or her obligations, the permanent resident is able to enjoy several rights and social benefits to which Canadian citizens are entitled, including health insurance, protection under Canadian law and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, as well as the right to live, work or study anywhere in Canada and request Canadian citizenship.

It is also possible to renew your permanent resident card if you have not yet obtained Canadian citizenship.

Canadian Citizenship

The application for citizenship is the final step in becoming Canadian.
Based on six different criteria, the outcome of the application essentially rests on the time spent in Canada. Processing times vary from eight months to over two years after submitting your application (depending on your movements outside of Canada and the accuracy of the information you provide). After your file has been reviewed, you will sit a written citizenship test on your knowledge of Canada. Finally, once successful in the test, you will attend a citizenship ceremony where you take the oath of citizenship and receive a certificate of Canadian citizenship.
